Lake Winnipesaukee Service area

Boat Repair and Mobile Marine Service Around Lake Winnipesaukee

Mainline Marine is based in Mirror Lake in Tuftonboro, on the eastern shore, and covers the lake rather than one town on it — every town around it, and about 50 miles beyond. Below, shore by shore, is what's actually true: the launches, the restrictions, the water.

A lake big enough to change how service works

Lake Winnipesaukee covers about 71 square miles, Paugus Bay included. It runs roughly 21 miles north-west to south-east and it's anywhere from one to nine miles wide, 180 feet at its deepest, with at least 264 islands. It sits 504 feet above sea level, and eight towns front it.

Those numbers are the whole argument for a mobile marine mechanic. A boat that will not start at a dock in Moultonborough is not a short tow from a shop in Mirror Lake, and three of Moultonborough's public accesses are restricted to town residents holding a parking pass, so trailering out is not always even an option. On a lake this shape, the mechanic traveling beats the boat traveling almost every time.

The eight towns on the lake

Clockwise from the southern tip. Launch and access detail is included where it is published; where it is not, nothing is invented — call the town or the marina.

  1. 01

    Alton, NH

    • Downing's Landing, Alton Bay
    • West Alton Marina
    • Roberts Cove Basin

The southern tip. Downing’s Landing at Alton Bay is the only state-managed public boat access ramp on Lake Winnipesaukee, with West Alton Marina offering public launching around the clock for a daily fee and Roberts Cove Basin charging as well.

  2. 02

    Gilford, NH

    • Fay's Boat Yard
    • Governors Island

South-west of Laconia, with Fay’s Boat Yard on the shore here. Governors Island and the Gilford shoreline sit right on the main body of the lake.

  3. 03

    Laconia, NH

    • Weirs Beach
    • Paugus Bay

The western shore, including Weirs Beach and Paugus Bay. The busiest water on the lake in July and August, and the place where a cooling fault picked up idling in traffic gets found the hard way.

  4. 04

    Meredith, NH

    • Meredith Public Docks
    • Goodhue Boat Company

The north-western corner. Meredith Public Docks are free to town taxpayers and residents with a decal and charge everyone else, and Goodhue Boat Company keeps a private launch here.

  5. 05

    Center Harbor, NH

    • Center Harbor Town Docks

Between Meredith and Moultonborough at the top of the lake, with public access at the Center Harbor Town Docks. One of the five ports the MS Mount Washington has to reach before ice-out can be declared.

  6. 06

    Moultonborough, NH

    • Lees Mills Landing
    • States Landing
    • Long Island access

The long northern shore. Lees Mills Landing, States Landing and the Long Island access are all here — and all three are restricted to town residents with a parking pass, which is exactly why a mechanic who comes to the boat is worth knowing.

  7. 07

    Tuftonboro, NH

    • Mirror Lake
    • Melvin Village

Home ground. Mirror Lake is an unincorporated village in the town of Tuftonboro, in Carroll County, sitting between Mirror Lake itself and Lake Winnipesaukee. Melvin Village is the other village on this stretch of shore.

  8. 08

    Wolfeboro, NH

    • Wolfeboro Town Docks and Boat Ramp
    • Goodhue & Hawkins Navy Yard

On the south-eastern shore and the closest sizeable town to Mirror Lake. Public access at the Wolfeboro Town Docks and Boat Ramp, with Goodhue & Hawkins Navy Yard also on the water here.

Beyond the lake: about 50 miles out

The lake is the heart of the service area, not the edge of it. The owner's own answer is "all towns around Winnipesaukee up to the North Shore of Massachusetts and southern Maine" — roughly 50 miles from Mirror Lake, and further for the right job. That takes in the rest of the Lakes Region, the Maine border towns to the east, and the run south towards the Massachusetts coast.

Outside the lake the answer depends on the job: a repower or a planned service travels well; a single dockside no-start ninety minutes away may not. Say where the boat is on the call and you get a straight answer either way.

Access rules change. Confirm launch fees, decals and resident restrictions with the town before you tow.

The season is bracketed by ice, not by a calendar

Ice-out on Winnipesaukee is an actual declaration, not a feeling. It is called when the MS Mount Washington could reach all five of its ports — Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton, Weirs Beach and Meredith — and a spotter makes the call from the air. The record runs back to 1888. The earliest ice-out ever recorded is March 17, 2024; the latest is May 12, 1888. In 2026 it was declared on April 13.

The far end of the season is softer. The MS Mount Washington runs from late May into late October, and marinas on the lake take boats out on their own schedules rather than a common date. In practice the winterization queue fills from late September, and the boats that get a choice of date are the ones booked before it does.

Questions we get asked

How far around the lake do you travel?
Every town on Lake Winnipesaukee, and roughly 50 miles out from Mirror Lake. That gets you into southern Maine and, depending on the job, the North Shore of Massachusetts. Give the marina or dock address when you call. You’ll get a straight answer on travel, not a vague promise.
Can you work on a boat at a residents-only launch?
Working at the boat avoids most launch restrictions entirely, which matters in Moultonborough especially, where the three public accesses are all limited to town residents with a parking pass. If the boat is in a slip or on a mooring, the ramp rules are somebody else’s problem.
When does the season actually start here?
When ice-out gets declared. That’s the day the MS Mount Washington could reach all five of its ports: Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton, Weirs Beach and Meredith. They’ve kept the record since 1888. Earliest, March 17, 2024; latest, May 12, 1888. This year, 2026, it came on April 13.
Do you build a separate page for every town?
No. A page per town with nothing town-specific in it is a page for a search engine rather than for a boat owner. Everything real that can be said about each town is on this page, and it will grow as there are actual jobs, photographs and customers in each place to point at.
